The Union Public Service Commission has released the provisional answer key for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 shortly after the completion of the examination process. The move marks a procedural shift in the UPSC recruitment system, where answer keys were traditionally published only after the entire examination cycle concluded.
The decision follows proceedings before the Supreme Court in Himanshu Kumar v. Union of India (W.P. (C) No. 118/2024). During the case, aspirants raised concerns regarding delays in answer key publication and the limited opportunity available to challenge disputed questions. Following the proceedings, UPSC informed the court that provisional answer keys would be released after the Preliminary Examination as part of a revised transparency mechanism.
The Civil Services Examination remains one of India’s most competitive recruitment processes, conducted for appointments to services including IAS, IPS, IFS, and allied central services. According to examination-related reporting and official updates available in May 2026, around 5.49 lakh candidates appeared for the Preliminary Examination out of 8.19 lakh registered applicants.

QPRep Portal Open for Objections
Candidates can review the provisional answer key and submit objections through the Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep) available on the UPSC online platform. UPSC has fixed May 31, 2026, at 6:00 PM as the deadline for submitting representations.
The Commission has clarified that objections submitted through email, post, or offline mode will not be accepted after the deadline.
Under the revised process, candidates must support each objection with three authentic references. According to UPSC guidelines, acceptable references may include NCERT textbooks, official government publications, and recognised standard reference books. Coaching notes, handwritten material, and unofficial online content are not expected to be accepted as valid supporting evidence.

The expected result timeline is based on previous UPSC examination patterns and has not been officially confirmed by the Commission.
One Question Dropped From GS Paper 1
UPSC has also dropped one question from General Studies Paper 1. As a result, the paper will now be evaluated out of 99 questions instead of the usual 100.
Based on proportional calculations discussed by examination analysts and coaching institutes, each correct answer in GS Paper 1 may carry approximately 2.020 marks, while incorrect answers may attract a deduction of around 0.673 marks. UPSC has not separately issued a detailed clarification regarding the revised marking formula.
The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), or Paper 2, continues to remain qualifying in nature. Candidates must secure at least 33% marks, equivalent to 66.67 marks out of 200, to qualify.

Paper Analysis and Expected Cut-Off
Initial reviews from coaching institutes and examination experts described the General Studies Paper 1 as analytical and comparatively lengthy. Several analysts noted that the paper required extensive reading and stronger conceptual understanding across subjects.
Questions related to Ancient History, Art and Culture, economy, and integrated current affairs reportedly received notable weightage. Experts also observed a higher number of three-statement questions, which increased the complexity level for candidates relying on elimination techniques.
Based on unofficial coaching analysis, the General category cut-off is being estimated in the range of 81 to 86 marks. UPSC has not released any official cut-off figures, and the final cut-off will depend on overall candidate performance, vacancies, and category-wise evaluation.
Result Timeline and Next Stage
The final answer key and individual candidate marks are expected to remain undisclosed until the completion of the full Civil Services Examination cycle in 2027, in line with UPSC’s existing process.
Based on previous examination schedules, the UPSC Prelims 2026 result is expected between June 7 and June 14, 2026. Candidates qualifying in the Preliminary Examination will become eligible to appear for the UPSC Mains Examination scheduled to begin on August 21, 2026.
