Introduction
The 2026 engineering admission cycle has brought several changes across India’s higher education sector. Among the most significant developments is the inclusion of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process. IISc Expands Undergraduate Engineering Offerings
IISc has introduced three new BTech programmes for the 2026 admission cycle:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Mechanics and Computing
These programmes are being offered alongside the existing Mathematics and Computing course.

JoSAA 2026 Reports Higher Seat Availability
According to the JoSAA 2026 Seat Matrix released for counselling in May 2026 and retrieved on 6 June 2026, the total number of seats has increased from 62,853 in the previous cycle to 67,323.

The largest numerical increase has been reported among IIITs and GFTIs. The addition of IISc’s undergraduate programmes further expands the range of options available through the centralised admission process.

NIT Allahabad has also discontinued its branch sliding mechanism. Institutional communications indicate that these changes are intended to reduce academic pressure associated with branch migration processes.
New Academic Pathways at IIT Delhi and BITS Pilani
According to IIT Delhi’s academic updates for the 2025-26 session, eligible BTech students may apply for an Integrated MTech pathway in a different discipline after their third year.
