Heavy monsoon rainfall has prompted several state governments across northern India to temporarily suspend classes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued Red and Orange Alerts for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, flash floods, and landslides. An IMD Red Alert indicates the need for immediate action due to severe weather, while an Orange Alert calls for preparedness and heightened caution.
The precautionary measures affect parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and, earlier this month, Ghaziabad in the Delhi-NCR region. School closures, examination postponements, and travel advisories have been issued to reduce risks for students, teachers, and staff during the ongoing monsoon spell. The information below is based on official notifications and weather advisories available as of the last update.

Himachal Pradesh Implements Precautionary Closures
Following IMD Red Alert warnings, Deputy Commissioners in Kangra, Mandi, Chamba, and Sirmaur ordered the temporary closure of government and private educational institutions. In Sirmaur, the closure continued through July 22 after the IMD maintained an Orange Alert. Readers should refer to the latest district orders for notification numbers and any subsequent revisions.
The closure applies to schools, colleges, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs), vocational institutes, Anganwadi centres, childcare centres, and selected higher education institutions. Residential campuses, including IIT Mandi and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital, Nerchowk, continued operations under local safety arrangements.
Examinations and Infrastructure
Scheduled examinations during the closure period have been postponed, with revised dates to be announced separately by the respective institutions.
According to Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority situation updates released during the ongoing weather event, more than 280 roads, including stretches of NH-5 and NH-707, remained affected by landslides and debris as of July 22, 2026. Rail services on the Kalka-Shimla route also experienced disruptions, while heavy rainfall affected power and water supply infrastructure in several districts.
Jammu and Kashmir Extends Summer Vacation
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has extended the summer vacation for government and recognised private schools in the Kashmir Division and the Winter Zones of the Jammu Division until July 26, 2026. Schools are expected to reopen on July 27, subject to any revised government notification.
The vacation originally began on July 6 because of heatwave conditions. However, updated IMD forecasts predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning prompted the administration to extend the break.
Education Minister Sakina Ittoo confirmed the extension, while the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) postponed selected secondary and higher secondary examinations. Students should refer to the latest JKBOSE notification for revised examination schedules.
Uttarakhand Announces District-Level Closures
District administrations in Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, and Champawat temporarily suspended classes in schools and Anganwadi centres following IMD Orange Alert warnings. Nainital also extended the closure into July 22 because of continued rainfall.
Authorities warned of possible flash floods, landslides, and disruptions along hill roads. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve and to follow instructions issued by local administrations.
Delhi-NCR Situation
No fresh region-wide school closure has been announced across Delhi-NCR during the current spell of rainfall. Earlier in July, Ghaziabad suspended classes from nursery to Class 12 after heavy rain caused severe waterlogging. Schools in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad have continued normal operations while authorities monitor weather conditions.
Public Safety Advisory
Authorities have advised residents to:
- Follow IMD weather bulletins and district administration advisories.
- Avoid rivers, flooded roads, waterlogged areas, and landslide-prone slopes.
- Travel only when necessary during periods of heavy rainfall.
- Keep mobile phones and emergency devices charged in case of power disruptions.
