The National Book Trust (NBT), India, has launched a series of Hindi novellas inspired by Rajatarangini, the 12th-century historical chronicle written by Kalhana. The initiative aims to introduce children and young adults to the history of Jammu and Kashmir through accessible narratives based on notable historical figures and events recorded in the classical text.
An autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the National Book Trust has developed the series to encourage reading while promoting awareness of India’s literary and cultural heritage. NBT’s Rajatarangini Initiative
Rajatarangini is widely regarded by historians as one of the earliest historical chronicles of Kashmir. Composed in Sanskrit during the 12th century, it documents successive rulers while describing political developments, governance, diplomacy and aspects of social life.
According to the National Book Trust’s official announcement, the novella project originated during a Rajatarangini workshop held at the second Chinar Book Festival in 2025 (historical event). Narratives Drawn from Historical Sources
One novella focuses on Emperor Lalitaditya, recounting his victory over the Kannauj ruler Yashovarman and campaigns traditionally associated with the expansion of Kashmir’s influence. Historical accounts also mention conflicts involving Arab and Tibetan forces, although historians continue to evaluate these events using literary, archaeological and epigraphic evidence.
Another volume explores the life of Queen Yashovati, portraying her role as regent following a period of conflict. Some historians describe her among the earliest recorded women rulers, while acknowledging that evidence from this period remains subject to scholarly interpretation.

Earlier Literary Adaptations
The NBT initiative builds on earlier efforts to present Kashmir’s history through children’s literature.
Author Devika Rangachari’s Stories from Rajatarangini: Tales of Kashmir, published by the Children’s Book Trust, explores the political, social and cultural life of ancient Kashmir through illustrated stories. She also authored Queen of Ice, a historical novel on Queen Didda based on Rajatarangini, inscriptions and numismatic evidence.
Illustrated adaptations have also appeared in Amar Chitra Katha, including Chandrapeeda and Other Tales of Kashmir (1984) and The Legend of Lalitaditya (1999). In addition, author Mallika Ravikumar has written historical fiction such as 565: The Dramatic Story of Unifying India and The Battle of Baramulla, introducing younger readers to the events surrounding Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India in 1947.
