India’s Job Market Is Becoming More Competitive
According to LinkedIn’s analysis, 72% of professionals are actively exploring new job opportunities, while 76% report that the hiring process has become more challenging. The study also notes that the average number of applications submitted for a single vacancy has more than doubled since early 2022.
LinkedIn attributes these trends to stronger competition, evolving employer expectations, and the increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has accelerated demand for new technical and professional skills. As a result, professionals are broadening their job searches beyond metropolitan regions to include emerging employment centres with expanding industrial ecosystems and comparatively lower living costs.

Regional Economies Are Becoming More Diverse
LinkedIn’s findings indicate that many of these cities are expanding beyond their traditional industries by attracting investments in newer sectors.
Visakhapatnam, which retained the top position in the rankings, continues to strengthen its established port, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical industries while adding investments in AI, technology services, and data centres. Major employers include Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Miracle Software Systems, and Laurus Labs.
Ludhiana is diversifying from its manufacturing base into aviation, hospitality, and steel, while Surat is broadening its economic profile through startups, exports, and commercial real estate alongside its textile and diamond industries.
In Vadodara, engineering, technology, and pharmaceutical investments complement its established industrial base. Ranchi is gradually expanding into organised retail, hospitality, education, and corporate services, supported by urban development initiatives and institutions such as IIM Ranchi.
The study also highlights Raipur’s growing focus on semiconductor manufacturing, AI infrastructure, and pharmaceutical investments under the “Naya Raipur” development programme. Similarly, Vijayawada is integrating information technology and e-governance into its commercial economy, while Rajkot continues to strengthen its manufacturing sector alongside sustainable urban planning initiatives.

The analysis suggests that improved connectivity has become an important driver of regional employment growth. Better transport infrastructure and urban development projects are supporting business expansion across multiple sectors.

Technology and Banking Continue to Lead Recruitment
Although employment opportunities are becoming more geographically distributed, the report indicates that the sectors driving recruitment remain closely linked to India’s digital and financial economy.
According to LinkedIn, IT services and technology consulting rank among the top three hiring industries across all ten cities, while banking and financial services are among the leading recruiters in eight of the ten locations.
